A Thank You by Megan D. Martin

I have found as a writer that having writing friends/critique partners is imperative to being successful in your writing career. Input of others, especially people you trust is very important. I chose this post for Honoria’s blog because she is my closest author friend. We have actually know each other since second grade and attended high school and (some) college together.

I began writing my first novel in 2008 and gave up part of the way into it. It wasn’t until I reunited with Honoria at the end of 2009 in a college history class that I actually put my fingers back on the keys and started writing again. The class was not my favorite and having her in there with me was probably the only reason I survived it. She (already had two books published at this point) looked over my work, showed me what I needed to fix and helped me realize that I wasn’t quite as ignorant of writing as I thought I was. She also introduced me to how the world of reading had expanded into these neat things called ‘e-books’.

I have come a long way since 2008. I recently had my novella Forbidden Angel published and I also have a job as a content editor for Breathless Press. Reading, writing, and editing romance is all I’ve ever wanted to do and I wouldn’t have been able to do that without the help of my wonderful author friend Honoria.

So, I hope all of you will take today to thank your author friends for all they do for you.  Whether it’s for critiques, blog opportunities, or listening to you complain about things that only other authors would understand (i.e. characters who refuse to do what you want them to and muses’ who hide at the most inopportune times, lol.). Don’t forget them, they are invaluable!

Check out my debut novella— I would have never finished it without the help and encouragement of the wonderful Honoria Ravena.

Blurb:

When captured by the Nazi's, Sarah finds herself in a concentration camp that not only brings her closer to death...but closer to love.

Sarah Brenner, a young Jewish woman, is terrified when she finds herself in the heat of a railcar bound for a work camp in Nazi Germany. For years she, along with her mother and sister, had hidden from the SS, but no one could hide forever. Her hatred for those who have enslaved them is ever-growing, especially when they arrive and she encounters the shockingly handsome Nazi doctor who can’t seem to keep his eyes—or hands—off her.

Aurel Rothstein is not your everyday concentration camp physician. The endless prisoners and lack of care he's allowed to give have made him numb to the work he so coveted. It isn’t until he comes face to face with a beautiful prisoner that his heart becomes involved with his job—a forbidden and fatal move to any Nazi.

When a vile soldier takes direct interest in Sarah, she will be forced to make a choice that will change her life forever: ignore the pull toward the handsome doctor or give in to the forbidden passion he awakens with only a look. Either way they both risk everything...

Guest Post from Kayla Jameth

Cinder has never been limited to the one godmother in his story. He has a few others besides.

The very first of these women, Linda Reilly, is responsible for his conception. She told me about Samhain Publishing's open submission call for fairy tales. At the time all I could think was "Yeah, right! Who would publish anything by me?" However, I conceived a plausible plot for a Cinderfella (m/m take on Cinderella), and it wouldn't let me go.

I actually had to set aside the fanfic slash I was working on to start Cinder's story. I had only written a couple of chapters of my fanfic so I by no means considered myself a writer, much less an author. But I was writing for myself and my friend Sara, so it really was a moot point at that time.

After I finished Cinder's story, I asked Linda and another author, Rebecca Leigh, to read it. Rebecca loved it and wanted me to sub it. And I might have, except I had missed the deadline on the submissions call. So I filed it away and just went on writing one shots for a small group of friends.

Deanna Wadsworth, another m/m romance author (Sensing a theme here?), likewise loved it and pushed me repeatedly to submit it. By this time I had actually published a short story and a novel with Breathless Press, so I finally took her advice.

I revamped the story a little (read applied everything I had learned with subsequent stories) and sent it off to my editor. Linda, Rebecca, and Deanna were right; From the Ashes was accepted!
From the Ashes will be available after the New Year.

Rebecca and Deanna are still writing m/m erotic romance. Linda was forced to give up her writing by some people who refused to see the message in her stories, that love is always right.
So I just want to say "Thank you" to all of Cinder's godmothers.

Blurb:

Cinder never thought that he could rise from the ashes of his life, but an unexpected encounter with a woman claiming to be his fairy godmother may be just what he needs. Finding himself flung into his very own fairy tale, she sends him off to meet his Prince Charming. But was the gown really necessary?

Excerpt:

Cinder glanced around. Paper lanterns floated in the trees, lined the walks, and graced the gazebo near the reflecting pool, giving the grounds a mystical air. Their warm glow caught the dancing jets of the fountain splashing merrily to his right. The musical, crystalline tones carried on the night wind’s breath. He was reminded of the enchanted gardens in the fairy tales his father had read to him when he was a child. What would happen to him if he dared walk there?

Henri led him toward the gazebo. Soon he would find out.

The cool breeze caressed his uncovered neck. Cinder shivered at the ethereal touch. Henri turned to him, the question clear in his eyes, but he didn’t know how to answer. Instead he breathed in the tangible scent of rich earth and flowing water, hoping to calm his bounding heart.

Henri lightly stroked his arm. Cinder’s breath caught at the silky brush of the other man’s fingers. He drew another shaky breath. Henri may have meant to soothe him, instead his touch set Cinder’s wayward body aflame.

They left the last of the courtiers behind as they entered the dim interior of the fanciful pavilion. Vines climbed its intricately carved posts, perfuming the air within. The music and voices of the aristocrats faded away. Only a single intrepid nightingale could be heard over the cheerful babbling of the fountain. Hidden from the rest of the court, an unworldly sense of peace filled him. Was his very own fairy tale about to come true?

Bespelled and bemused, he could feel the magic in every beat of his heart, in every trembling breath he drew.
Once inside the bower, Henri reached to cup Cinder's cheek. Unused to being touched, he nearly flinched away but managed to still, heart pounding, before giving himself away. The older man's thumb slid across his cheekbone and came to rest lightly on his mouth. Why did he want to lean into that caress?
The other man's warm, slightly musky scent filled his nostrils, drowning his senses.

Henri's other hand wrapped around his waist and drew him close while tipping his face upwards. Cinder's breath left him in a rush, stirring the noble’s hair. Henri was all that he could see, his mouth slowly, carefully descending toward Cinder’s. If he allowed this, the other man might discover his deception. He couldn’t risk that, so why then did he ache to feel Henri’s kiss? Their lips brushed, light as thistle down.

Surprisingly, Henri's mouth was soft and warm upon his own. After a moment, Henri's pressed more firmly against his. Something fluttered in his chest, trying to get out.

Cinder didn't think to pull away until he felt Henri's tongue seeking entrance. The hand on his face slipped to his nape and held firm. He froze in shock, not even daring to breathe, as flames rushed through his body. The very beat of his heart betrayed him.

The questing tongue stroked his lips and pushed between them. It slid over his teeth, seeking to enter. When he protested, Henri's tongue swept in and began a lazy, sensuous exploration that left him breathless.
Soon he found himself stroking Henri's tongue with his own. Henri responded to his fledgling attempts by pulling him closer and moaning into his mouth. He had never experienced anything so deeply sensual and erotic. He fed his own needy pleas to the other man one at a time.

Finally they separated slightly, Cinder panting heavily, trying to catch his breath. Was Henri as affected by their kiss as he was? A quick glance confirmed Cinder was not alone in his arousal. Flushed and gasping, Henri gazed at him with eyes full of wonder and something unnamed smoldering in their depths.

Authors Who Fuel My Writing by Ivy Bateman

Hello Everyone

I'm here today at "Come Hither Pumps", guest blogging with Honoria, to promote my latest Breathless Press release "The Fifth Story". It's a paranormal erotic adventure that takes readers all over the place: a cabin, a castle...actually two castles and finally a space ship. It really does make sense, trust me.

I enjoy writing in many different styles just as I enjoy reading many different genres of books. However, my two favorite authors and authors that I find have a profound influence on my writing are Neil Gaiman and Sharon Shinn.

I love Neil Gaiman because Neil is just...well he's incredible. He can write in any genre and his stories always paint the most glorious and yet sometimes horrifying pictures.  My favorite of his stories are when the extraordinary comes out of the ordinary. A normal chap could be busy doing his thing, minding his own business and then BOOM, he's attacked by a demon over the phone line.

Sharon Shinn is more of a science fiction writer. She sets her stories on different, but completely believable worlds with beautifully complex characters, carrying out heart breaking story lines. My favorite of her books is on called Archangel. In this book, two strangers meet, have to marry, and although they do not like each other at first, their passion for each other is ignited through music. The sound of each other's voices sparks their inevitable love for each other. It wasn't until I considered reading a passage at a writing group that I realized how sensual the book was. I was always moved and loved the scenes when she was describing music because the passion was so real, but when I read one scene I really loved out loud to my couch, I discovered how sexual it was. "I can't read this out loud!" I said to my cushions with the smiley faces. "I'd be too embarrassed!" There isn't a lot of actual sex in the book and now it's obvious why; the music is the sex. It's really wonderful.

If you haven't discovered these two authors, I highly recommend both of them—after, of course, you pick up The Fifth Story! :)

Thanks very much to Honoria for having me on today! Now I'll pass this over to my blurb and my excerpt!
Have a lovely Friday.

Blurb for The Fifth Story By Ivy Bateman
Every day we encounter doors. Some of these doors are open to us and some of them are closed, but when we pass through any door, a different truth or mystery lies beyond the threshold.
The night Bryn is pulled into a world of her own stories by a shadowy being, her reality is changed forever. Souls and danger, hauntingly beautiful witches, sexy and dangerous vampires, a soldier with a dying wish; she knows that each door leads to a story and to outcomes she can't control, but in order to return home, Bryn must complete a set of tasks for the enigmatic and strangely sensual Darkness.
With four stories to enter, four items to retrieve, Bryn takes part in plot points so out of character that she almost loses herself in the tales she's written. More than once she questions her sanity and curses herself for creating such perilous realities, but she always remains focused on her goal; the creation of the fifth story.
The Fifth Story, Excerpt

She walked quickly around the counter and headed to where the sign indicated where the washrooms were, but she couldn't find the women's room. Then she almost slapped herself with ridiculousness. Who cared if she went into the men's room? She marched over the door and pushed on it. Immediately she fell back. The door was stuck. She pushed on it harder, but could only open it about a foot. Something, or someone, was lying in front of the door. Bryn squeezed her head through the narrow space and looked down at the floor. Coran was lying passed out on the cold tile.

Bryn thought maybe something strange had happened in her story, and Coran was already dead. How lucky would that be? However, she realized that the story hadn't changed that drastically when Coran groaned, revealing that he was very much alive. He rolled over, away from the door.

With his weight suddenly off the door, and Bryn's weight still being pushed against it, the door went flying open. Bryn stumbled and fell into the washroom. None too gracefully, she hit the floor with a satisfying smack, and knocked her head against the tile floor with a hard clunk.

"Ow," she said, as she rolled on her back and pressed her hands against a rapidly rising goose egg on the right side of her head. "Ah" she yelped as the door closed on her foot.

"Are you okay?" asked a voice with a gentle Scottish brogue.

Bryn turned her head and opened her eyes. Coran, who looked like he'd been through a rough time, was leaning over her. His blond hair was a mess and it fell into his gray eyes. He had soot on his face and he smelled, not unpleasantly, of smoke. He gave her a little smile. "My dear, are you all right?" he asked her again.

She smiled in return. She was touched by his concern. The ash on his face and the apparent absence of anyone else in the castle told her she had come into the story not long after the first time she'd entered with Darkness. Coran had every right to ignore her and he really had no time to get involved with a stranger and yet, he didn't seem to be in any rush at all. Instead, he helped Bryn sit up.

As soon as his hands touched her skin, Bryn gasped and felt her heart beat quicken. Coran looked embarrassed and quickly, on unsteady legs, he stood up and got a paper towel. He wet it with warm water and kneeled down a couple feet away from Bryn. He handed her the paper towel. "Your face, it's quite dirty."

"Oh, thanks." Bryn said, trying to avoid looking at him too much. Her heart was pounding in her chest. Why had she written Coran to have this effect on women? "It looks like I'm not the only one that's recently been in a bit of a scrap," he said with a chuckle. Bryn couldn't help beaming at him with amazement. He was just as kind as she'd written him to be. However, if she was correct, this man should be putting all chivalry aside and be searching the castle for Melusine. He should be calling upon the ancient gods to help him in battle with the sea witch, but instead, here he was, watching Bryn wash her face and being concerned about her well-being.

"Is your head very sore? Can you stand?" he asked as he gently touched the bump on her head, but quickly pulled hand back when Bryn sucked in her breath at the feel of his hand on her hair.

"Yes, I mean—no, it's fine, and yes, I can stand," she stammered as she pushed herself off the floor. She again tried to avoid eye contact with him, but it wasn't helping. Coran was having a profound effect on her senses—something which she should have remembered could happen, but had completely forgotten about. In her story, Coran had a powerful effect on women and it was something he could do nothing about. Whether it was his aura or his pheromones, no one could tell, but women, upon meeting Coran, not only couldn't control themselves around him but didn't want to. Their thoughts would travel immediately down a sexual path as soon as they stood close to him and they would offer themselves to his every whim. Even the most reserved women would find their bodies pulsing immediately with desire for the tall blond stranger. Only those who knew how to, could control their passions for Coran. Katie, his assistant, was usually one of them, but sometimes, her guard would slip and she would be overcome with sexual longing for her handsome boss.

Bryn was finding her own guard was slipping rapidly and started thinking about very naughty things and wishing that she had time to explore her hidden bad girl side. Was this happening because she'd written him this way or was it because he looked so much like Tyler?
