Update 8/24/2013

So I took my week off for some writing. I didn't get enough done in my opinion, but I have a lot more done now than I did, so I guess I have to take what I get. I wrote over 7k while on break. I'm only up to 8,600 since I went back to work. So my next sci fi book is at a grand total of 12,918 words.

I'm feeling pretty uninspired right now and it sucks because things slow to a snail's pace and then there's procrastinating involved. And there is no reason for me to not be getting 3,000 words a day. Wow, even this blog post is a boring downer where I'm lacking the words to express anything.

I think I'm going to try skipping to the next scene I want to write. Or maybe even go back and write the scene I feel is missing from the beginning. Maybe I'll like the story a little more after that. 12,918 is way too soon for me to be stuck. 26k is my magical stuck number.

Meh, in other news. I bought a new laptop. Mine was doing this whole not charging thing and the computer people said they couldn't fix it again. So new computer it is. His name is Leonard and so far we've been very happy together. I tried so hard to hang on to my other computer until Windows 8 was a thing of the past, but no such luck. Thankfully Leonard seems much less touchy than my parent's Windows 8 laptop which most of the time I would love to chunk out the back door.

Of course, a new laptop means cleaning out files in the old one. It was a nightmare, and hopefully I deleted nothing vital. Because I deleted a lot. I think it was mostly things I had duplicates of and/or haven't even looked at it for years. So I don't think I'll be screaming about not being able to find anything.

Aaaaand I'm writing!

Sooo, I don't know if I discussed this in a previous post, but I have six days off in a row from work. If you don't know, one of my favorite events of the year is coming up, Yaa Halla Y'all. It's a big belly dance thing, and they have like workshops and shows and vendors. Originally I was going to take some workshops but I ended up deciding against it because I'm not actively dancing at the moment or even practicing and I'm already taking workshops in January at 3rd Coast Tribal.

Anyway, that's the long winded way of saying I'd already taken the days off in case I did workshops and I now have much time off. So I'm trying to finish a book. Or at least get a sizable portion of it done. I'd like my second sci-fi romance to come out before the end of the year if I can accomplish that. I couldn't be more far off. I currently have 6,679 words. But that is 2,319 more than I had this morning. All the new words feel like crap, but they usually do. At least they're editable crap.

I know I should be writing whether I have the days off and I've been doing some, but not a ton. I've been trying to work on the evil book that I still haven't finished. My plan was for it to be this year's second release but I think I have a better shot with the sci-fi book (which tells you how much me and the evil book argue). But the evil book (Bad Animals is its working title) WILL be released next year even if I have to kill all three of us to do it (that's right characters! If I go down, you're going with me!)

Anyway, wish me luck on getting as much of this book done as possible. I'm hoping for another thousand words sometime tonight. I kind of got started late today and am hoping to get a better jump on things tomorrow.

In other news: Even though I said I was going to keep doing beauty stuff on this blog I decided to put it somewhere else because I change my mind constantly. You'll be able to check it out under the Beauty & Skincare tab.

July already

Well, since I'm already getting a few questions I'm going to cut straight to the good stuff of this post. My Cyborg Savior is the first in my new sci-fi series, so there will be more. And Torin's book is next. The plan is to get it out about the same time next year. Earlier if at all humanly possible. Its not written yet, so I make no guarantees. I'm less than 4,000 words into it.

So, today has been pretty awesome. I actually got two days off in a row from work and I spent all of today in bed reading MacRieve! Who else loved that book and is now impatiently awaiting Munro's book? It came at the right time because I'm seriously lacking in some good paranormal reads lately, and I'm back working on Bad Animals (don't look at me like that. It's taken other people longer to write a book. This isn't the world record) and I needed some serious werewolf inspiration. Boy have I got it!

So back to Bad Animals. This time I'm determined to finish it. I know you've heard that before, but bear with me. I think I might actually manage this time because when I started reading it, every word didn't completely suck to me. Maybe I'm in a super positive place, or maybe the medications I was on for my eye for a while messed up something in my brain. But when I read a part of it, it was actually good! Maybe everyone will finally get to read Laedan's story. People have asked about that too, and I feel like big time slacker author since it hasn't come out yet. But now since I actually have a positive attitude about this book, I don't think I can lose.

A Thank You by Megan D. Martin

I have found as a writer that having writing friends/critique partners is imperative to being successful in your writing career. Input of others, especially people you trust is very important. I chose this post for Honoria’s blog because she is my closest author friend. We have actually know each other since second grade and attended high school and (some) college together.

I began writing my first novel in 2008 and gave up part of the way into it. It wasn’t until I reunited with Honoria at the end of 2009 in a college history class that I actually put my fingers back on the keys and started writing again. The class was not my favorite and having her in there with me was probably the only reason I survived it. She (already had two books published at this point) looked over my work, showed me what I needed to fix and helped me realize that I wasn’t quite as ignorant of writing as I thought I was. She also introduced me to how the world of reading had expanded into these neat things called ‘e-books’.

I have come a long way since 2008. I recently had my novella Forbidden Angel published and I also have a job as a content editor for Breathless Press. Reading, writing, and editing romance is all I’ve ever wanted to do and I wouldn’t have been able to do that without the help of my wonderful author friend Honoria.

So, I hope all of you will take today to thank your author friends for all they do for you.  Whether it’s for critiques, blog opportunities, or listening to you complain about things that only other authors would understand (i.e. characters who refuse to do what you want them to and muses’ who hide at the most inopportune times, lol.). Don’t forget them, they are invaluable!

Check out my debut novella— I would have never finished it without the help and encouragement of the wonderful Honoria Ravena.

When captured by the Nazi's, Sarah finds herself in a concentration camp that not only brings her closer to death...but closer to love.

Sarah Brenner, a young Jewish woman, is terrified when she finds herself in the heat of a railcar bound for a work camp in Nazi Germany. For years she, along with her mother and sister, had hidden from the SS, but no one could hide forever. Her hatred for those who have enslaved them is ever-growing, especially when they arrive and she encounters the shockingly handsome Nazi doctor who can’t seem to keep his eyes—or hands—off her.

Aurel Rothstein is not your everyday concentration camp physician. The endless prisoners and lack of care he's allowed to give have made him numb to the work he so coveted. It isn’t until he comes face to face with a beautiful prisoner that his heart becomes involved with his job—a forbidden and fatal move to any Nazi.

When a vile soldier takes direct interest in Sarah, she will be forced to make a choice that will change her life forever: ignore the pull toward the handsome doctor or give in to the forbidden passion he awakens with only a look. Either way they both risk everything...

What is it with Regency? by Raven McAllan

I often wonder just what interests us about the Regency period in Great Britain. (Well, mainly England, I guess.)  I'm sure the clothes played a part. Dampened muslins, elaborate hair-styles, pretty reticules. Elegant Gentleman in coats so tight, that three valet's had to help him dress. Perfectly tied cravats. So different from all the phases today's fashion goes through. All these things happened, and make a great picture in my mind.
However, over and above all this though, for me, is the intrigue. The messages of the fan, so clever and so romantic. Added to the whispered about, but never spoken out loud, assignations and dalliances, flirtations and scandals, and it's almost like they all happened, soley to entertain us today.
When I decided to write my first Regency Novella, I wondered whether I could do the era justice. Who knows if I have? Some people will hopefully say yes, others no. It's all subjective. But oh, I had so much fun researching for it. the more I read, the more I realized just how inventive our ancestors were. From birth control (abstinence, coitus interruptus, lemon juice, sponges,) to dildo's (carved jade) and how to evade a chaperone (so many methods including adding a soporific to a drink), I giggled and groaned as I read. Even at a ball, there would be dancing the waltz, (as close as many woman got to a man) considered 'fast', and lots of nooks and crannies for a light (and not so light) flirtation.
It didn't take me long to realize I was hooked; I had to incorporate some of these ideas into a romance. I knew I wouldn't, couldn't write a conventional love story. True enough I didn't. Wallflowers Don't Wilt was about a F/F/M ménage.
Several books later, my next Regency, La Bella Isabella, released Friday 28th November by Breathless Press is I hope still that little bit different. This is the first book in my Ladies Of London series, and again it's not about a conventional young lady. None of them are. (Book 2 —The Best man's Bridesmaid, and 3—The Perfect Gift, are released in November and December respectively).
They follow Amanda, Caroline, and Judith as they are determined they will settle for nothing less than what they want.
Here's the blurb for Amanda's story, La Bella Isabella…

When your life is all arranged for you, there's only one thing to do—enjoy yourself while you can.
When Amanda finds out whom her parents have chosen for her to marry, it puts her into despair. The one man occupying her dreams is to be hers in name only. Determined to enjoy life before it's all too late, La Bella Isabella and Her Dancing Girls is formed.
The beautiful girl he keeps meeting by accident intrigues Harry. There is something familiar about her...he just cannot place.
A private performance by La Bella Isabella provides a little knowledge, but is a little knowledge a dangerous thing?

You'll need to read the book to find out.

Do You Like Halloween? by Angelina Rain

Every year, when I was a kid, I went as an angel or a witch on Halloween. I've always had a soft spot for witches. Love their pointy hats, black dresses, and those cauldrons that cooked up spells and trouble. So, when a group of author friends decided to write a witchy Halloween anthology, I couldn't walk away.

We call ourselves the Five Witches; Sonia Hightower, Lorraine Nelson, Angelina Rain, Nikki Prince, and Chacelyn Pierce. And this is our story.

Cauldron of Tales Anthology

When five witches with wild imaginations get together, the pot boils over with trouble, romance, and sensuality.

In The Devil’s Berries, readers are taken back to Renaissance England where Sabine, facing her last night alive, reveals how the witch really came to be associated with the broomstick. Will her nightly visitor bring her more trouble or will he give her peace?

Cindy can’t decide if she’s Hexed Or Vexed her longtime friend, Killen. All she knows is that one second he was her very manly friend, and the next, he’s a dog. Can her Witchy Group on Facebook help her fix the mess, or will she be burdened with a comical canine companion the rest of her days?

Willow Vance is a poor excuse for a witch, and by some stroke of luck, the six-year-old Past Potion she crafted worked. When the hexed warlock finds out about Willow's curse, he will stop at nothing for her to lift the spell. Willow can run, but does she want to?

Alone for Halloween, Bryn is ready to take some frustrations out on her purple battery-operated toy, but she’s in for a surprise when the Toy Soldier becomes a flesh-and-blood man. Grateful to be free of his plastic curse, Byron will do anything for her...no matter how naughty.

A dance of seduction under The Light of the Moon turns into a night of passion, but will that be enough for Aponi to keep the man of her dreams enchanted? Or will the flame that was ignited die out just as quickly as it sparked?

Danica finds herself confused after a trip to the carnival with her best friend and coworker. She’s been attracted to Lisette for months, but are her feelings really being reciprocated, or was there A Sappho Spell cast in Madame Lilith’s tent?

It will also be available on Amazon on October 1.

Guest Author Yazmin Subha

Hi Honoria.

Thank you for having me over to visit. As you know, I am really excited at the moment because I have had my first ever release, Wildfire came out on 24th August with Breathless Press.

Here's the blurb and an excerpt.

Blurb:

Braden has searched all his life for the one who will help him regain his humanity and give him absolute power. One bite and he knew Millie was the one he had been searching for. Millie, a fiery red head is the last one in the line of high born witches who would rather die than give herself to this vampire. After all he killed her mother for her blood as well, didn’t he?  But in a twist of fate Millie learns too late what the truth is. But will death be the only thing that unites them?

Excerpt:

Millie knew this wasn’t a good idea. Brad wasn’t a man one could say no to. It was a stupid idea to hide in the carwash. She prayed no one would want to wash their car at three AM as she squeezed between the rollers. Her heart beat fast. She took a gulp of air and then blew it out to try to calm herself.

No footsteps could be heard, only the soft whistle of the trees as they swayed in the warm night air. She relaxed her shoulders and sighed. Maybe Brad had decided to no longer pursue her. Maybe that blonde with the big boobs had caught his attention at last, and he had gone off with her to a quiet spot to find out if they were real or not.

Wait a few more minutes, she told herself.

After a few minutes she pried herself out and took a step over the roller by her knees. All of a sudden the whir started and the rollers began to move. What the hell. How… Her mind ran on ahead of her. The soap was dispensed and the rotation of the rollers caught her attention. The darkness did not help; the route out wasn’t clear. The rollers in front of her whipped against her and sprayed suds and warm water that soaked her silk dress so that it clung to her.

She leaned back and tried to gain a hold of something to anchor her. Damn him. How had he found her? She knew there was something strange about him when he happened to be near her all the time. Even when he was across the room, within a blink of an eye he came to stand next to her—in her space.

The warm water, combined with the sensation of the soft, soapy bristles tantalized her skin. The rollers brushed against her and sent electrical currents to her clit. Hell…how could she be getting turned on by this?

Something warm blew across her face. A silent kiss…an unknown hand…lingered on her cheek.

Got you! The voice was in her head.

How can that be? she thought. She shook her head to get rid of the fuzziness caused by the water as it cascaded over her body. Warm hands caressed her breasts. Her senses heightened as one unknown hand stroked down to the juncture between her legs. The fingers flicked and pressed her sensitive clit and a wet tongue licked at her neck. She was lost to the sensations all round her. How could he do this? She felt him near, but he wasn’t there. How? The fingers stroked harder and she could not help but arch into the hand.

Mine alone. Open for me. Let me in come into you. His command was as urgent as the brushes that stroked her skin. At last he emerged before her—tall, broad, and dark. His mouth came down on hers and their wet lips met. Their tongues danced as his hands pulled her to his chest. He stroked her ass and pulled up her dress. She shivered against him.

Well I hope your readers like the sound of that.

Up and Coming Works.
I am waiting for edits for book 3 of the Blood Bar Chronicles anthology due out later this year with Breathless Press. My story is called 'Logan's Captive.' Also in the edits queue is 'Gypsy Butterfly' which is part of Eclipse of the Blood Moon anthology with Evernight Publishing and Breathless Press have also said yes to another book called 'Guardian Awakening' so I am waiting for all that to come through. This book is intended to be first in a series of three, so I need to rework the second book and start thinking about the third.

Here's a little bit about me:

Yazmin Subha is a busy mother of two children, whose husband has got used to her sitting tapping away on her laptop. By day she sits at her job, all respectable and prim but by night she is imagining feisty heroines and sexy alpha males.

She is a British author who grew up with a love of reading. Books created other places, times and worlds to visit. It was the desire to try to write that saw her pen her first short story as a teenager. But then everyday life got in the way and it was only recently that she began scribbling again. Encouraged, or rather dragged screaming and kicking by her critique group UCW she decided to ‘have a go’.
Her teenage dream is finally coming true.

Well Honoria, thank you for letting me visit! I hope to come again.

Bringing A Gargoyle to Life - Dianne Hartsock

Bringing a Gargoyle to Life

We all seem to love the magical, fantastical creatures of fantasy. But how does one breathe life into such a being, have him step from our imagination into reality and be accepted by a reader?

In my m/m erotic fantasy ‘Philip’s Watcher’, my hero Adrian is a stone gargoyle on the walls of the castle, guardian to the young heir Philip. To involve the reader and make Adrian’s part more believable, I began with Philip. I wanted to gain sympathy for the young heir right from the start, so when he accepts Adrian the reader would also.

Philip turned his head, hoping to catch a response to his outrageous statement. The stone remained cold, and a fey mood came over him, desperate.

“You remain silent?” His gaze swept the heights of the castle. Dozens of statues stared down at him or looked out over the land his family protected. He laughed, and it sounded bitter to his ears. Rain pelted the castle and struck his face, and Philip railed against a fate he had no control over. Was he a mere puppet in this war for power? He had seen his family killed one by one. Would he be next?
In defiance, he climbed up on the balustrade and opened his arms. The storm seemed to increase in fury. Rain pounded against him, the wind seemed bent on pulling him from the wall. He shouted and shook his fist at the sky.

“If I fell, Gargoyle, would my Watcher catch me?” Rainwater poured from the spouted demons on the towers down to the valley far below. Mother had said he had a Watcher, a protector given to him at birth, but he’d never seen him. Never felt his presence. Alone, bereft, Philip wondered if he shouldn’t step off the edge…

At once a blanket of warmth engulfed him. He was cherished, guarded, needed. And beneath that he sensed love, deep and pure.

“Come down.” A voiced thrummed inside him, full of fear. Philip climbed onto the balcony and stood with his back to the storm. He hung his head, ashamed of the childish, dangerous act.

After this, I wanted to bring Adrian from stone into living flesh. I really wanted to keep away from the flash and glitter of movies. So I had it happen without magic at all, but by a ‘gift’ all watchers possess, part of their nature.

Adrian waited, his stomach churning with worry while the storm passed overhead and dwindled into the south. When he was certain Philip wouldn’t return, he rose from his crouch and stretched his arms to the sky. His black wings spread out behind him with a soft rustle.

He ran a hand through his thick hair and drew a breath, weary to his bones. Nothing had gone right. Jonathon shouldn’t have died. The fact that Philip and he had warned him of the danger in leaving the stronghold didn’t make the man’s loss any less tragic. True, those who would spread darkness in the world had brought the war to their doorstep by threatening Philip’s life. But Jonathon should have seen through the ruse and remained in the castle where his power was the strongest.

Adrian’s brow furrowed. Should he have gone with Jonathon, spoken with the wise woman? Silva had strengths of her own. As a child, Adrian had been cautioned against her magic, but he had come to respect her abilities. And she had always been kind to him, an orphaned, lonely boy. Would she be able to help him protect his darling Philip from this dangerous, unknown enemy?

Adrian touched the deep scar on his face and remembered the warmth of Philip’s fingertips. He followed the scar down his neck and left pectoral and trembled as he imagined Philip’s hands on him, their bodies entwined, urgent. He smiled sadly. “Fool, such happiness isn’t meant for you.”

So now we’ve seen Adrian become a living, breathing male. But have we engaged the reader, brought this gargoyle to life for them? I decided to make him as flawed as the rest of us, insecurities and strengths, joys and heartbreaks. A person we can relate to.

He caught his breath as wind rustled through the treetops, reminded of the day he’d sworn his life to Jonathon. They’d stood on the castle’s high walls in the sunlight while the breeze lifted his dark hair, cooled his hot skin.

“These are perilous times, Adrian. We need your strength,” Jonathon urged.

Adrian stared into the distance, his heart in agony. He was only seventeen! Young and fit, with the first taste of love lingering on his lips from his night with Jaimin. “You ask too much—”

He stopped speaking at the cold light in Jonathon’s eyes. The frosty tone of his voice sent a shiver through Adrian. “There’s light and dark in the world, my son. My clan has chosen to stand against the darkness, but we need Watchers to ferret the vile ones from the shadows and to keep our young ones safe. Do you count your life above the needs of the world?”

Ice dripped into Adrian’s heart. Jonathon had taken him in as a child when his parents died of the fever that had taken half the village. A black year. Adrian owed his life to the man. He bowed low, his dark hair sweeping the stones at his feet. “As you wish, lord,” he murmured while his heart broke for the life he would never have.

My story, Philip’s Watcher’ is about two young men caught up in a war neither is prepared for but find the strength to succeed in each other.

Philip’s Watcher

Blurb:

Darkness is spreading in the world with only the powerful Agenor family to oppose it. In the guise of a stone gargoyle atop the castle walls, Adrian has protected Philip, the young heir, sine birth, watching him grow from childhood into lonely adult hood.

When the clan chief, Philip’s father, is betrayed and murdered by those he trusted, Adrian resumes his human form to better safeguard Philip. As lovers, they fight against the darkness, but will their strength be enough to stem the dark tide sweeping the land?

In this battle for power, there can be only one victor.

Nearing The End

Okay, remember that Fast Draft project I started and then just stopped posting about. Well it didn't turn into a real Fast Draft, but it's definitely still the fastest I've written a book, ever.

I'm not done, but I will finish the first draft today. Yes, I'm that cofident, because I'll stay up until 5 in the morning to finish if I have to. Though I guess technically that wouldn't be finishing today but whatever.

The one thing that bothers me about this book that I WILL have to fix is the fact that I skipped a plot point in the middle out of laziness. There's no other excuse. I thought something like "I want to be done and this isn't MAJOR so I'll leave it out." But really, I feel it's kind of needed and so when I go back for rewrites I'll have to change it. It should give me a good 10 to 20 pages more than I'll have now. Which is good, I don't know why I got all lazy and tried to make my book SHORTER. *sigh* Issues.

Oh, and another thing that bothers me is I don't have a title yet! Usually I get about 10-20k in and a title just pops into my head. No, not now. I'm reaching the end of this book and it's still under Sci-Fi Untitled. I made up a shitty title to pitch to Avon but I won't be keeping that. It was like My Cyborg Savior or something. It sucks and isn't unique at all.

Anyway, I'm going to go finish the end of this book. I've probably got 1000+ words to go or less maybe.

Pat McDermott Interview

1.What are you working on now?

I’m finishing up the third book in my alternate history trilogy, which supposes that if a key battle in Ireland’s past had a different outcome, kings and queens would still rule the Emerald Isle. In the first book, A Band of Roses, the present king’s daughter, Princess Talty, joins a military mission that explores parallel worlds in which she finds danger and romance. Her “otherworld” adventures continue in Fiery Roses, just released by Red Rose Publishing. I’m polishing the third book now. Salty Roses is a rollicking good pirate story, one I’ve had a fabulous time creating.

2.What inspired you to be a writer?

Hearing and reading fairy tales and poetry as a child. Falling under the spell of a story made me want to be a magician who could create similar spells for others. I’ve been writing short stories for as long as I can remember. One of my tales received an honorable mention for children’s fiction, an award that gave me the boost I needed to write and finish my first novel.

3.How many rejection letters did you get before you got an acceptance? What advice do you give the writers about dealing with rejection letters?

I have a drawer full of rejection letters from agents and publishers. A writing teacher warned me to expect them, though I still found the initial batch of barely legible form letters discouraging. The nicer rejections, more personal and actually signed, stated that my book wasn’t for them but encouraged perseverance.

Authors shouldn’t take rejections personally. Perhaps that particular agent/publisher has met their monthly quota for new submissions when a new query arrives, or the agent is going on leave. Keep at it, attend writing classes and workshops to hone your craft, never stop reading, and read a wide variety of books to learn what makes good writing. Above all, persevere in your quest to become a published author.

4.How did you celebrate your first contract?

I opened a good French burgundy and shared it with my writers’ group.

5.What's your favorite way to advertise?

Through blogs, online interviews, and any internet sites that allow interaction with readers. The whole promotional aspect of writing befuddles me, I’m afraid. I’m still learning about it. While I realize marketing is important, I’m happier creating stories. I’ve attended book marketing seminars and did a couple of book signings, and I loved that a local readers’ group chose A Band of Roses as their book-of-the-month and invited me to be their guest author. Great fun. I wish I could say the same for the rest of the marketing process.

6.What do you do to amuse yourself when not working?

Cooking is one of my favorite pastimes, and I enjoy exploring various ethnic cuisines. I’ve recently mastered some delicious Turkish, Spanish, and Irish dishes, and I make a mean risotto. I also love to travel, especially to Ireland.

7.Where do you see your writing going in five years? In ten?

That depends on how well readers receive my stories. I’ll always write, even as a hobby, and I’d love to live in Ireland doing it, at least for a while.

8.What is your favorite "comfort food"?

9.You've been to Ireland many times. What is your favorite place there?

If I’m going over to write, the Beara Peninsula. I visit a gorgeous writing retreat where all you can hear are cows mooing and the roar of ocean waves. Otherwise, I’m a city kid who loves Dublin. It’s a great base of operations. I’ve also spent time in County Mayo’s Westport, a pretty little market town on Ireland’s west coast. Oh wait, you only asked for one favorite place . . .

10.Who are your favorite authors?

That’s a tough one. With so many wonderful authors out there, how can anyone have a favorite? Simon Winchester conveys facts in an easygoing manner that seems more like fiction that nonfiction, very helpful for research. For fiction, Edward Rutherford and Diana Gabaldon draw me into their historical worlds, John Sanford and John Connolly into their modern day crime scenes. I admire William Trevor’s ability to create vivid images and complex characters from succinct phrases. Overall, I read a wide range of genres, from Dean Koontz to Roddy Doyle to Norah Roberts and Sarah Addison Allen, and I’m not done finding “new” authors yet.

11.It’s plug time. Where can people find out more about your books? Got an excerpt you’d like to share?

I’d be happy to share an excerpt. Before I do, I want to thank you, Honoria, for your gracious hospitality today. Good luck to you and your own writing!

The best to learn about me and my books is my website, www.patmcdermott.net. I also have a blog called Put the Kettle On, at http://www.patmcdermott.net/blog/blog.html

The Mammoth Book of Irish Romance (Anthology Featuring my Novella “By the Light of My Heart” - Release Date January 26, 2010)

In this excerpt, Irish Princess Talty Boru and her husband, Neil, have unexpectedly arrived in a place called Velavesnia. They've accepted the hospitality of Baron Anza Lucini, who thinks Talty is Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes. We join her, as will Neil, in a luxurious outdoor bath heated by volcanic springs.

EXCERPT

Water rushed over the ledge to the bathing pool below. Rainbows danced in and out of the spray, adding a magical feel to the hot, sultry springs. A serving woman had left clothing and towels nearby, though Talty was in no hurry to use them.
The cascade's gentle roar blocked all sound. She forgot the Peregrine Portal—and her disturbing anger toward Neil—and luxuriated in the refreshing shower pouring from the shadowy rocks above her. Wearing only her wedding and engagement rings, she worked a third lathering of rosemary-scented soap over her hair and skin to remove the last traces of sticky soot.

When Talty lived in Japan, her then husband, Eric Yamada, took her to bathe in onsen, volcanic hot springs that soothed both body and spirit. The bubbling mineral waters behind Anza Lucini's hunting lodge were similar: steamy, salty and mildly sulphuric. Anza had said his ancestors discovered the springs generations earlier.

Today, a wall of hewn black stone and cypress trees surrounded the thigh-deep pool. Beyond it stood a terra cotta hunting lodge, Anza's base while he and his men scoured the forest to supply his small domain with meat.

Squeaky clean and dry at last, Talty wiggled her way into the Velavesnian garments. The woolen top, a knee-length tunic embroidered with colorful designs, was more finely woven than those Anza's two serving women wore.

"It belonged to the baroness," Renen, the younger of the women, had said. "Her clothing is still here. I think it will fit you well, ma'am."

The tunic fit incredibly well, as did the soft leather boots. Renen had also left a bronze comb wrought with leaves and tiny horse-drawn chariots. Dressed and rejuvenated, Talty sat on a seat carved from stone and worked the tangles from her hair. Suspecting that the comb, too, had belonged to the baroness, she wondered who the woman was and what had happened to her.

"I was afraid you'd melted away, you were out here so long."

Smiling at the sound of Neil's gentle baritone, Talty twisted her head. He stood at the arched entrance to the baths looking delicious in his Velavesnian attire. The well-cut wool and leather emphasized his brawny arms and shoulders. Her approving gaze trailed downward, lingering over his trim waist and the muscular thighs stretching his gray leggings. Waves of pleasure rippled through her. How could she have been angry with him?

She glanced up at his handsome face. His raven hair, still damp from his bath, set off his fair skin. His familiar smile was absent, however. Uncertainty clouded his keen blue eyes.

Some reconciliation seemed in order. "I don't believe I've ever been so filthy."
He circled the pool and sat beside her. The pleasant scent of rosemary soap hovered between them. "Why didn't you let the women help you? They seemed miffed when you sent them away."

"There are only two of them, and they had enough to do to prepare the meal. Besides, I didn't know how to explain why a goddess would have such awful scars."

His fingers brushed the top of her tunic. "Nick is helping them fix the food. Richard told Anza that Nick is sworn to feed your mortal body, while I'm sworn to see to that mortal body's more amorous requirements."

Smothering a grin, Talty cocked her head. "Oh?"

A corner of Neil's mouth turned up in the tiniest smile. "I thought it was ingenious of him. Nick will see that we're fed well, and I am your husband." He tugged her tangled hair. "Even if you are angry with me."

"I am not!"

"Come on, Tal. I know you too well. I suspect we're about to have our first real quarrel."

She opened her mouth to deny it; the truth in his eyes drew a sigh of resignation from her lips instead. "I don't want to argue, but you can't keep being so protective of me. At home I try to ignore it, but in a place like this, your interference could get someone hurt, or even killed."

"I'm your Shivail, Tal. All my life I've learned it's my duty to protect you." He reached for her left hand and rubbed his thumb over her rings. "Even if I weren't in love with you, I'd still be your Shivail. I try not to be overbearing about it, but I can't forget how badly you were hurt. I never want to see that again."

Neither did Talty. The memory of Roger Wessex's assault put an edge in her voice not meant for Neil. "That was a long time ago. I'm a warrior now. Don't treat me like some useless prima donna. We all have to do our share if we're to survive here, and I can do my share very well. You know that. You're my training partner, and you've read those reports."

Sighing silently, he took the comb from her and studied its intricate design. "A pretty thing," he said, and shifted to sit behind her. He ran the comb and the fingers of his free hand through her hair, a very unfair tactic during an argument, she thought. His gentle strokes were wonderfully soothing—and distracting.

So was his intimate tone: "I was just getting used to you being Crown Princess again. Now you're a goddess—and a fierce one at that. I've had a bad day, Tal. I've gone from crossing Ireland in the Morrigan to crossing your portal into who knows where. I thought we were all going to die in that lab, and then I thought I'd die from being sick. You and Richard and Nick have done this before. I haven't. I don't know the rules."

He was right. While they were alone together, she should give him a crash course, teach him how the Peregrine Team worked . . . but his stroking fingers felt so good.

"We should talk about the rules, Neily."

He set the comb down and pushed her hair away to kiss the spot where her neck and shoulders met. Taking his time, he embedded a string of nuzzling kisses up to her ear. "Don't be angry with me, Tal. I can't bear it."

Her eyes closed. She savored the thrills shooting down her back. The strange clothing she'd just put on suddenly grew warm. "I'm sorry. I don't mean to be angry.

But you—"

He seized her chin and twisted her head to his. The intimacy of his kiss cut short any further lecturing. Sorry for the rift between them, she kissed him back, an utmost kiss that sought to reassure and reconcile.

When at last they broke apart, the confidence had returned to his eyes. "I'll let you go round trouncing whoever you like if it'll get me kisses like that. I'm sorry, Tal. I'll try my best not to be such a ninny-hammer." He stood and pulled her to her feet.

She squeezed his hands. "You're no such thing. You're a fine man, and I love you well. I only wish we were in a more private place just now."

"So do I. First chance we have, I'm going to give you a proper bedding. Right now we'd best get back to the house."
